In December 2024 Brisbane City Council announced a stormwater upgrade for New Farm, scheduled for the first half of 2025, to reduce localised flooding.

What was planned

The Elystan Road drainage upgrade was set to run from January to June 2025. It involved:

  • new drainage pipes, connections and roadside gullies
  • micro-tunnelling to install pipes underground without digging up the surface, to limit disruption to residents
  • upgraded backflow systems to help protect nearby areas from river water backing up during floods

Other works in the same package were backflow device maintenance (April to June 2025) and playground redecking (May to September 2025).

Council infrastructure chair Andrew Wines said the council was "taking proactive steps to reduce risks and improve resilience," and Central Ward councillor Vicki Howard said specialised techniques would be used to cause the least impact on residents.

What we don't know

The council's announcement did not state a cost, and this story hasn't confirmed whether the work finished on schedule.

Dates are as announced in December 2024. Check Brisbane City Council's project pages for the current status.
